MACROECOLOGICAL PATTERNS OF NOMINALLY HERBIVOROUS FISHES

Nominally herbivorous fishes are known to be important components of reef communities, where they are usually abundant and compose a great proportion of local biomass. Due to their intense feeding behaviour, herbivores can exert a great influence on the benthic community by substantially altering patterns of distribution, biomass and productivity of different algal groups in different scales. Nevertheless, little information exists regarding the taxonomic and functional distribution of herbivorous fishes worldwide. In this talk, I will show patterns of distribution of different groups of herbivorous fishes and how they are related to a number of ecological factors on a global scale. Understanding these patterns is crucial to predict changes on local assemblages due to ongoing global changes and the imminent collapse of coral reefs.

 

Dr. Thiago Mendes has studied different aspects of herbivory and reef fish ecology in Brazil during his PhD in Marine Biology at Universidade Federal Fluminense (Rio de Janeiro). Currently, he is a post-doctoral researcher at the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement in Perpignan (France) working with macroecology and biogeography using reef fish as model organisms.
